Absolute Commercial Interiors on delivering the new national NMC Competence Test Centre for nurses & midwives

We are thrilled to announce the official opening of the new national NMC Competence Test Centre for nurses & midwives! This fantastic centre can be found at Leeds General Infirmary & will host up to 7,000 people each year.

Andrea Sutcliffe CBE, Chief Executive and Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council officially opened the new centre at Leeds General Infirmary together with Duncan Burton, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England.

The centre is a special design with practical examinations in mind, particularly the Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The OSCE is the practical section of the Test of Competence, which all overseas-trained nurses or those returning after a career break must complete before they can be registered to practice.

Our brief was to create an environment that is supportive and engaging for the trainee nurses visiting the centres, with a look and feel that facilitates a testing environment, whilst also encouraging a sense of ease for candidates.

Our design made best use of the natural light available for the testing suites, as well as finishing the spaces with softer colours. The functionality of the space is where it really shines however, with advanced recording facilities installed in every test space and considerations made for examination and feedback of the OSCEs.

In total, we have delivered 13 test spaces, changing facilities, a quiet room, a candidate briefing area, an office space for the staff working at the centre and a breakout area.

Andrew Gillam, Head of Property for Leeds and Teaching Hospitals, had these kind words to say about the work Absolute did on the project:

Thank you for the excellent work undertaken. Jean-Pierre Labadie, the Project Manager from Absolute did an outstanding job on delivering this space and my only concern is that the rest of the Trust will be also expecting such improvements from their working environment.
